(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police and the Secret Service are investigating a rash of counterfeit bills being passed at businesses in Lawrence County.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers were contacted Tuesday at 11:38 a.m. by Regions Financial Corp. that they found several counterfeit $20 and $50 bills in night-deposits from area businesses.

"The counterfeit currency was found in four night-deposits of four area business," Parsley added. "The bank has contacted the Secret Service so we will be working with them on this case."

Over the weekend, a Jackson's Marathon Station called police after a man attempted to pass a $20 counterfeit bill there.

"The man went to pay with the counterfeit money and the clerk noticed the bill was just not right," Parsley says. "When she mentioned it to the man, he snatched the bill and fled the station."

Officers were able to get a description of his vehicle and a partial license plate.

Anyone with information about the counterfeit money is asked to call the Bedford Police Department at (812) 275-3311.
