(BROWN CO.) - The Brown County Commissioners are meeting in emergency session this morning to assess the extent of damage from flooding. The commissioners may be issuing a disaster declaration for Brown County.
Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer says our county has been put on standby to assist.
According to county officials, the hardest hit area was in the eastern part of the county.
The Brown County Democrat reports that homes on Salt Creek and Hoover Road are flooded. Officials are considering evacuating families in that area.
County officials are asking flood victims to leave their homes and stay with family members or friends. Those who have no place to go can go to the YMCA, which has opened as an emergency shelter, but space is limited.
Volunteer firefighters and other emergency workers have been working around the clock dealing with flooding, downed trees, powerlines and reports of fires and medical emergencies and water rescues.
Emergency crews rescued a family and their dogs on West Washington who were floating in the flood waters in a canoe. A tow truck pulled a vehicle from high water on Helmsburg Road and conservation officers and other rescue crews are continuing their search this morning for a man who was swept into a creek on Hoover Road last night.
