Bloomington Man Arrested After DNA Confirms He Raped 73-Year-Old Woman

Last updated on Tuesday, July 7, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested after his DNA linked him to the breaking into an apartment and rape of a 73-year-old woman.

Police arrested 34-year-old Jerald Honeycutt on charges of rape, burglary, intimidation, confinement and strangulation.

Police were able to arrest Honeycutt after they requested a search warrant to obtain his DNA and the Indiana State Police lab found Honeycutt's DNA matched that found at the crime scene.

According to police, Honeycutt broke into the woman's apartment and sexually assaulted during the early hours of Sunday, June 14.

According to Bloomington Capt. Joe Qualters, the woman did not know the man who attacked her.

According to police, the woman was asleep on her couch when she was woke by the man who had covered her nose and mouth with his hand. He then pressed his forearm into her throat, choking her.

Qualters says the woman was sexually assaulted twice - once in the living room and then when he forced her down a hallway into a bedroom.

The woman alerted police after she was able to activate her home medical alert system at 5:47 a.m., which sent her attacker fleeing through an unlocked sliding glass door at the woman's home.

The woman was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment and a sexual assault exam.
