BBB Reports Text Message Hacking On The Rise

Last updated on Monday, July 27, 2015

(UNDATED) - Hackers are accessing sensitive information in email accounts using misleading text messages, and can sometimes hijack the account for spam emails.

In one scenario, a hacker obtains an individual's mobile number and e-mail address though various spy apps or misleading messages. The unsuspecting individual receives a text message purportedly from their email service provider indicating that there is an issue with their email account.

The hacker goes into the login screen of the victim's e-mail account, clicks "Forgot Password" and requests a verification code to be sent via text. The hacker, pretending to be the service provider, then sends a text to the individual indicating there is an issue with their e-mail account and requests the verification code.

If the recipient responds with the code, the hacker now has full access to any sensitive information in the account. The hacker can even change the account password, locking the victim out.
