Alabama Woman Sought For Questioning For Man Torched, Captured In Shoals

Last updated on Sunday, July 12, 2015

(UNDATED) - An Alabama woman sought for questioning in the case of a man whose burned body was found in Leeds, Alabama nearly a week ago was captured Saturday in Shoals after a high-speed chase.

30-year-old Candie Zito and her cousin, Cory Zito, were both seriously injured in the chase.

According to Leeds Police Chief Byron Jackson, Candie and her cousin showed up at her grandmother's home in Montgomery and the grandmother called police. The two fled leading police on a 20-minute pursuit.

Leeds police on Friday had obtained a theft of property warrant against Candie Zito, which is why Indiana police were trying to capture her. Her cousin, 26-year-old Cody Zito, is wanted in Louisiana on a mid-June felony charges of domestic abuse battery with strangulation and domestic abuse battery, in two separate incidents.

The Zitos were in the 1998 Ford Escort last driven by Anthony Gibson, whose body was discovered Sunday night in a wooded area in Leeds. 22-year-old Anthony Shane Gibson was last seen alive July 2 when he left his home about 8 p.m. that Thursday night, telling family he was going to a nearby store. He never returned. He left in his grandmother's car, the white 1998 Ford Escort.

Gibson's body was burned beyond recognition. Jackson says he couldn't disclose details of the crime scene, and what may or may not have been found in the area around the body.

There have been no charges filed in Gibson's death.

Jackson told AL.com they will begin extradition once investigators get a better grasp on Candie Zito's condition, and possible charges in Indiana.

Daviess County sheriff's officials say they will release more information on the chase sometime today. Both of the Zitos were reportedly airlifted from the scene to a hospital in Evansville.
