Bedford Man Suffers Serious Injuries In Crash

Last updated on Thursday, July 16, 2015

(SPRINGVILLE) - A Bedford man suffered head and internal injuries after a crash on Ind. 54/58 Wednesday morning.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 66-year-old Janet Leighty of Bedford was traveling east on State Road 54 and was attempting to make a turn onto State Road 58 when 72-year-old Larry Williams of Bedford turned his 2001 Chevrolet into the path of Leighty's 2007 Dodge Caravan.

Williams told police that he did not see Leighty making the turn and when he attempted to avoid the collision he was unable to.

Leighty complained of chest pain and was taken to a local hospital. Williams, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered head and internal injuries. Williams is exempt from wearing a seatbelt because he has a pacemaker.

He was flown by Air Evac to Eskenazi (Wishard) Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Assisting at the scene were officers with the Bedford Police Department, Perry Volunteer Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department and a Seals ambulance crew.
