Work To Replace All Railroad Crossings Through Seymour Will Begin In July

Last updated on Tuesday, June 9, 2015

(SEYMOUR) - Initial work to replace all railroad crossings along the Louisville and Indianapolis rail line through Seymour will begin in July.

For motorists, that means temporary roadblocks and detours.

A total of 14 crossings in the city will be completely dug up and replaced this summer as part of an overall $100 million project to upgrade the entire 106.5 miles of rail line from Louisville to Indianapolis.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board approved the project in April after a lengthy study of how it would affect communities along its path.

The L&I railroad and CSX, which also uses the line, want the upgrades so more trains that are both heavier and longer can use it. The number of trains traveling through Seymour is expected to go from three to five a day to as many as 15.
