Indiana State Police Cruiser Rammed By Theft Suspect

(FAYETTEVILLE) - A Bloomington man was arrested after ramming Indiana State Police cruiser.

On Friday afternoon, ISP Sgt. Greg Day was traveling southbound on Avoca-Eureka Road near John Kern Lane at 4:35 p.m. looking for a person in a 1998 Jeep Cherokee who attempted to steal a vehicle minutes before in the 8000 block of State Road 158.

Sergeant Day met the suspect near the intersection of Avoca-Eureka Road and John Kern Lane. The trooper activated his emergency lighting and that is when the driver of the Jeep entered a field on John Kern Lane did a couple of doughnuts and then continued southbound directly toward the trooper's 2013 Dodge Charger.

Sergeant Day was unable to move in time and the cruiser was struck by the Jeep on the passenger side, disabling it.

The driver of the Jeep then fled southbound on Avoca-Eureka Road toward State Road 158.

Sergeant Day, who was injured, was taken by other troopers to IU Health Hospital for treatment of neck and back pain and later released.

A few hours later, the Greene County Sheriff's Office spotted the vehicle and after a short pursuit the Jeep crashed near Owensburg.

The male driver fled on foot and eluded capture. A female passenger was arrested.

42-year-old Clarence Butler Jr of Bloomington was eventually apprehended by the Bloomington Police Department after a foot chase Saturday morning.

The Indiana State Police investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

The ISP involved crash was investigated by Trooper Matthew Harris. Assisting were multiple troopers from the Bloomington Post, Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, Greene County Sheriff's Office, Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and the Bloomington Police Department.
