(MONOVIA) - Indiana State Police say one person has died and two others are hospitalized in critical condition after a fiery, head-on crash on Interstate 70 near Monovia in Morgan County.

Troopers say 35-year-old Christopher Sweet of Mooresville was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes in a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, about 11 p.m. Saturday when his car crashed into a 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer operated by 27-year-old Sahal Jama of Columbus Ohio. The Impala erupted in flames.

They say passers-by pulled Sweet from the wreckage but he was pronounced dead at the scene on I-70 about four miles west of State Road 39.

Jama and his passenger, 37-year-old Mohamed Ali of Columbus, Ohio, were transported to Eskenazi Hospital and both are listed in critical condition.

Troopers do not know at this time why Sweet was operating in the wrong lanes and the investigation is continuing.

Westbound lanes of I-70 were closed and traffic diverted to State Road 39 while the crash was investigated and wreckage cleared.

Investigating Officers were Indiana State Troopers Shaun Rawlins and Sergeant David Cox and assisting at the scene were Curtis Towing, Indiana Department of Transportation, Monroe Township Fire Department, Morgan County Coroner's Office, Morgan County Sheriff's Department.
