Hoosier National Forest Hosts Educational Events In July

(BEDFORD) - The Hoosier National Forest has several opportunities to learn about nature and get outdoors over the summer months.

Several extra programs are planned at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area and Brooks Cabin on the north end of the Forest in Monroe County, and at the Rickenbaugh House in Perry County.


  • July 4, 10 am - 4 pm - Talk with a Ranger at Brooks Cabin.

  • July 11, 10 am - 4 pm - Living history interpretation at Brooks Cabin.

  • June 12, 10 am - 4 pm - Dutch Oven Cooking demonstrations and Leave No Trace ethics will be taught by Yvette Rollins and Sara Earles from the Hoosier Backcountry Horsemen. There will be samples to try and they will teach how to limit your impacts on the land.

  • June 25, 10 am - 4 pm - Talk with a Ranger at the Rickenbaugh House at Indian-Celina Lake Recreation Area in Perry County. There will also be educational activities about trees available for children.

  • July 25, 8:00 p.m. - "From Caterpillar to Butterfly" - learn about butterflies with a bedtime story, craft & other activities at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area.



Hardin Ridge Recreation Area and the Brooks Cabin are both located just off SR 446 in Monroe County. Rickenbaugh House is located in the Indian Celina Recreation Area in Perry County. The recreation area is located just off SR 37 south of I-64.

Programs at Brooks Cabin are free. The other programs are also free, although a gate fee of $5/vehicle will be charged at the recreation areas.
