(DAVIESS CO.) - Daviess County is requiring moped/scooter owners to pay a wheel tax.
County officials know that even though the new moped/scooter tax won't raise much money and won't be popular, they are left with little choice.
Daviess County Commissioner President Michael Taylor says, the move is one county officials tried to avoid, but the Indiana Department of Transportation is forcing the county to charge the tax to include mopeds and scooters.
The new tax will be just like other wheel taxes - 10 percent of one's excise tax - payable when plates are purchased.
Local officials say they have been given no indication how much money the wheel tax on mopeds/scooters might raise.
The reason the county is going forward with the change is that the state has threatened to withhold all of the money Daviess County collects under the wheel tax unless it collects it on everyone. The wheel tax in Daviess County generates $580,000 a year.
