Last updated on Friday, June 5, 2015

(MITCHELL) - The Boyhood Home of Astronaut Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom will be open for free tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The home, at 715 Grissom Ave., in Mitchell, will be open during the same hours each Saturday through October, with the exception of Sept. 26, Persimmon Festival Parade Day, when the home will be open 10 a.m. to noon and after the parade until at least 6 p.m.

Grissom lived in the home from about age two until after he graduated from high school. The home remained in the Grissom family until after his parents' deaths. It is set up as a modest 1940s-50s vintage home with some Grissom family pieces included in the decor.
