(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Board of Works approved four operating procedures for the Bedford Fire Department.

Chief Jon Wagner says the policies have been in practice for some time, but were not written policy.

The board approved the following policies:

  • The fire department will maintain of nine firefighters on duty at all times and staff all stations and apparatus at full manpower. If a firefighter is sick, injured or doesn't report to work or is sent home, the shift commander is to call in the next off-duty firefighter to come in. The firefighter that comes in is to reschedule a day off as soon as possible.
  • Documenting a firefighter's status through the one-year probationary period and any promotions.
  • The use of cell phones or other electronic devices while on duty.
  • Rules for attire, such as dress uniforms and what firefighters can wear while at the fire station.
