(BLOOMFIELD) - Bloomfield High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) was recently announced as the most improved unit out of 43 schools throughout Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana.
They also earned a Distinguished Unit status for their outstanding performance.
The Greene County Daily World reports, although the Bloomfield NJROTC Program is significantly smaller than some of their competitors, they are still able to consistently perform at advanced levels and successfully compete in all competition areas, including air rifle, color guard, unarmed and armed military drill (in both the regulated and exhibition arena), academics, physical fitness, and orienteering.
Lieutenant Commander Mike Cluver, USN Ret. says a hard work ethic and team spirit is the key to the unit's success as well as leadership at all levels within the unit.
The cadets also remain active in the community.
They are supporters of the Riley's Children Hospital, where they donated 50 bags of toys and art supplies this past holiday season. This year, they worked to raise funds for their own Bring a Soldier Home for the Holidays campaign.
As a unit, they have completed nearly 1,000 community service hours. Each cadet served a minimum of 32 hours compared to the standard nationwide average of 17.5 hours per year for NJROTC cadets.
The top three community service volunteers for the year were Cadets Mercedes Wilcox, Allen Coble, and Matthew Puett, who each volunteered 50 hours of their time.
Other notable honors include Cadet EnRicco Rea-Goosey, Most Improved Cadet; Cadet Jacob King, Junior Cadet of the Year; and Jocelyn Gadberry, Senior Cadet of the Year and Unit Company Commander.
Distinguished Cadets for the year include Naval Science One Cadet Jacob King, Naval Science Two Cadet Mercedes Wilcox, Naval Science Three Cadet Madelynn Conner, and Naval Science Four Cadet Jocelyn Gadberry.
