Bedford Fire Department Headquarters To Be Dedicated To Former Fire Chief William Tovey

Last updated on Monday, June 22, 2015

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Fire Department headquarters at 1900 H St. soon will be dedicated to the late William H. Tovey.

Tovey joined the fire department in 1952 and served as chief from 1964 to 1980 when he retired. He is one of the longest serving fire chiefs, according to current Fire Chief Jon Wagner.

Tovey's stepson, Mark McKnight, contacted city officials about honoring his stepfather and late chief.

Wagner says it is an honor to name the Bedford Fire Department headquarters located on H Street after the late fire chief. Tovey was chief when the building was built in the 1960 and was an advocate for firefighters and the department.

"I was the last firefighter Chief Tovey hired at the department," Wagner says. "He was always fighting for what was best for firefighters and this department. He was among the group responsible at the state level for Indiana firefighters receiving death benefits.

A formal dedication ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.
