(JASPER) - An impaired scooter operator was eventually taken into custody, but not after taking police on a nearly 10 block chase.

Police were called just before 9 p.m. Sunday regarding a three-wheeler traveling the wrong way on Jackson Street.

The caller reported that the man driving the scooter was intoxicated and was swerving all over the roadway. The caller also reported that the man had dropped his hat and fell over attempting to pick it up.

There were other reports that the driver almost caused two accidents.

Police located the scooter traveling north on Mill Street near 11th Street and attempted to stop the driver, but the man continued traveling north on Mill Street, running stops signs at 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th streets.

Police were able to force the man to stop the scooter at 16th and Mill streets.

The man was ordered off the scooter, but he refused and after a short struggle officers arrested 51-year-old John Layman Jr. of Jasper.

Police say Layman was belligerent and argumentative and refused to participate in field sobriety tests.

He was taken to Memorial Hospital for a blood-draw and to be treated for minor injuries he received during the struggle with police.

While at the hospital, Layman continued to be belligerent with hospital staff. After receiving a warrant for the blood-draw and urine sample, police say Layman refused to comply with the judge's order.

Layman is facing felony charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, obstruction of justice and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within the last five years, misdemeanor counts of operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated with endangerment, disorderly conduct, reckless driving and resisting arrest and resisting arrest with use of a vehicle.
