Superintendent Ritz To Visit BNL On Friday

Last updated on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

(BEDFORD) - Superintendent of Public Instruction for Indiana Glenda Ritz will visit North Lawrence Community Schools Friday.

Superintendent Ritz is scheduled to arrive at the high school at 9 a.m. and has requested to meet with Superintendent Gary Conner.

They will meet for about 15 minutes in the BNL conference room.

Superintendent Ritz will then give a talk on the STEM initiative from 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the BNL Performing Arts Center.

The simplest definition of STEM is what it stands for, which is science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The ultimate goal of STEM education is to encourage students to take an interest in STEM subjects at an early age. Educators believe this will be beneficial to them when they enter the jobs market, and in turn it should benefit the greater economy.

National and state educational policymakers renewed efforts begun in 2006 to improve the overall mathematics, science and technology literacy of U.S. students. These efforts became known as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, initiative.

Although many of the nation's public schools had already begun a greater focus on mathematics and science as part of their core curricula, new academies as well as existing educational institutions took the focus one step further. Applying for, and receiving, government and private business grants set up for STEM education initiatives, these schools aggressively promoted the concept with the express goal of graduating students competent in a variety of STEM subjects.

Concluding this talk, Superintendent Ritz will answer questions.

She will then tour the North Lawrence Career Center.

If times permits, she will also tour the high school and perhaps visit with a few classes before her departure at 11 a.m.
