(BEDFORD) - With summer on the horizon, the Bedford Public Library continues to prepare for a summer filled with fun events for all ages.

The Summer Reading Adventure, a reading club children up to age 17, runs from June 1 through July 28. It includes a special club for teens and is open at no charge to all children. Children log their reading minutes online to earn rewards. Minutes can be logged on home computers or at the library.

Studies show that children and teens who don't engage in educational activities during summer can lose two months-worth of achievements they gained in the last school year.

The library has 19 special events on its summer calendar to encourage children to participate in the Summer Reading Adventure and to help every child stay on track with reading skills. By participating in the the program, children will find excitement, enrichment and engagement with new ideas.

Summer events scheduled include the return of Indiana Jim and his reptiles and Mike Hemmelgarn, a comedic juggler and ventriloquist. Special events for different age groups include CSI Library, a forensic adventure for children from kindergarten through grade 5, Teen T-shirt Tie Dye, Super Heroes Adventure Time, Bryan's Mad Science Slime, Teen Spark Your Imagination with General Motors Engineers, Creek Critters presented by the Department of Natural Resources and other events. Calendars listing all events are being distributed at local schools and are available at the library.

Crafts and science

Crafts focus on race cars through Sunday. Then, beginning Tuesday, children can have fun creating jungle animal masks.

Live beetle larvae are on display in a special container in children services. They currently live in whole wheat flour and eat sliced potatoes, but one day they will change into beetles. Children are encouraged to ask librarian "mad scientist" Bryan all about them.

The library is closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

Summer reading festival

The first big event of the summer is the Bedford Public Library Summer Reading Festival in the library parking lot on June 4, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This is a family fun event provided by the library and many community partners. This year's event includes snow cones, popcorn, music, police officers, a fire truck, games and activities. Everything is offered at no charge.
