One Person Suffers Serious Injures, Another Arrested After Head-On Crash

(BEDFORD) - One person suffered severe injuries after a head-on collision on Ind. 446, Sunday night and another man was arrested.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 22-year-old Randall Staggs of Bedford was flown by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital after suffering a broken femur in two places, broken chest bone, punctured lung, deep cuts to both arms and both ankles were dislocated.

His wife, 18-year-old Alexandria Staggs, suffered cuts and bruises and the couple's 3-month-old son suffered bruises from his car seat strap.

According to police, 25-year-old Zachary Hoppe of Bedford was traveling north in the southbound lane without the headlights on in his Ford Ranger when he collided head-on with Staggs 2002 Kia Sportage.

Hoppe was not injured, but police say he was intoxicated. At the scene a breathalyzer test showed Hoppe had a blood-alcohol content of .187. He was taken to IU Health Hospital for a blood draw and those results are pending.

Hoppe was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, OWI with a prior offense within five years, OWI endangerment, OWI with a prior conviction and was cited for driving left of center and failure to maintain headlights.
