Mitchell High School Team Places Second At State Envirothon Contest

Last updated on Wednesday, May 13, 2015

(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell High School Envirothon Team took second place at the State Envirothon Contest at Camp Illiana this year. Team members consisted of Jodi Brinkman, Trevin Grissom, Anna Kluender, Kaitlyn Thompson, and Kyle Waggoner.

The team, coached by Robyn Embry, earlier took first place at the Southcentral Regional contest. The Mitchell team then, along with the 2nd place team from Bedford North Lawrence and the 3rd place team from Springs Valley, went on to compete at the state contest.

The top 15 teams in the state then competed in a written test and a hands-on component in five categories: forestry, wildlife, aquatics, soils and urban forestry. They then gave an oral presentation on an urban forestry issue in their local area.

The Mitchell team chose how to deal with the emerald ash borer infestation at Spring Mill State Park. The team researched different approaches to control the borer, and interviewed several experts. They presented their plan to control the borers with wasps from China.

The scores for the teams were extremely close, but at the end of the day the Mitchell Team came in second. The winning team from the state contest was the Gibson County Homeschool Team. This team will go on to Springfield, Missouri to represent Indiana in the North American competition.
