(MARTINSVILLE) - After nearly five decades, a Martinsville widow received her husband’s military duffle bag.
48 years after Lance Cptl. Russell Evans was killed during the Vietnam War his widow Patricia Gose was given back a piece of his life that had been lost.
On Tuesday, she received her husband's military duffel bag.
When Evans died in 1967, the U.S. Marine Corps sent his belongings back to her, but it wasn't long until they were stolen from a storage shed.
Norman Fisher, Evans' best friend, just happened to go into the local flea market recently looking for military items when he spotted the bag.
Fisher bought his best friend's duffel bag and quickly called Evans' sister to let her know he had a surprise for her.
Something as simple as an olive-green canvas bag has brought back a flood of memories of how life was and how life could have been.
Evans left behind a letter for his wife and unborn child in case he was killed in the line of duty. He ended the letter with, "P.S. Don't let anyone forget me."
