March For Babies Raises $17,345

Last updated on Thursday, May 21, 2015

(BEDFORD) - March For Babies raised $17,345 Sunday at their event at the National Guard armory in Bedford, according to Chelsea Burke, Community Director of the Wabash Valley Division.

"This is community coming together to help the organization that helps every single baby born," Burke says. "When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to nearly half a million babies born too soon each year. The money raised supports programs in the community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies."

The money raise in March for Babies funds important research and programs that help babies begin healthy lives. More than 500 local programs were supported to help educate women and reduce risks during pregnancy. Comfort and information was offered to 90,000 families with a newborn in intensive care through March of Dimes NICU Family Support. Your involvement also helped the U.S. premature birth rate to drop for the 7th year in a row.

More than 29 teams registered to walk.

Bedford North Lawrence Freshman Emily Kern started the event with singing the National Anthem.

Lowe's donated wooden kid's crafts for a kid's corner and Boy Scout Troop 343 helped with set up and helped after the event.

Representatives from 1340 AM WBIW, Super Oldes 105.5 WQRK and Z102 102.5 WPHZ were also on location providing music for those that participated.

Walmart, with help from Frito Lay, Little Debbie and Sara Lee donated food and water for the event.
