"Good Samaritan" Likely To Face Charges

Last updated on Monday, May 18, 2015

(COLUMBUS) - Police say the armed robbery of a good Samaritan on Monday likely never happened.

Columbus Police say last Monday afternoon, officers were called to Washington Street and National Road after a man claimed that he had stopped to pick up a motorist who was walking with a gas can on U.S. 31 near Lowell Road just before 2 p.m.

Before the driver could get to a gas station, the alleged victim told police that the man pulled a gun and robbed him of his billfold and other property.

However Columbus Police Sgt. Matt Harris says detectives now believe that the man made up the story.

The man is now facing charges of filing a false police report.

Police have filed their findings with the Bartholomew County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges.

Police are not identifying who the man was that made up the story or why he did it, but police want to assure residents there was no armed robbery.
