(NASHVILLE) - Daniel Messel’s lawyer was allotted $3,000 in a court hearing Wednesday to help gather information in the murder case against her client.
Defense Attorney Dorie Maryan had initially requested between $5,000 to $10,000 for that investigation, but Brown County Prosecutor Ted Adams wanted to cap that amount due to the "limited nature of county funds."
Brown Circuit Court Judge Judith A. Stewart allotted $3,000 and says Maryan could request more if necessary to complete the investigation.
Public defender investigators will now review all of the evidence from the case and interview witnesses on behalf of the defense team at the county's expense.
Messel is charged with murdering 22-year-old Indiana University student Hannah Wilson, whose body was found in northern Brown County April 24. Brown County Deputies found Wilson's body near Plum Creek Road near State Roafter around 8:30 a.m. after a woman driving on Plum Creek Road saw Wilson's body face-down in a vacant lot. She had died from a fractured skull.
Judge Stewart asked Maryan if she believed the preliminary jury trial date of July 22 would still work. Maryan told the court she would most likely request a continuance, and the prosecutor did not object.
If convicted of murder, Messel could face a 45- to 65-year prison sentence.
