BMV Audit Indicates Some Motorists Might Be Getting More Refunds

Last updated on Wednesday, May 13, 2015

(UNDATED) - An independent audit of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles indicates some motorists might be getting more refunds because they have been overcharged for fees and taxes.

A 38-page report released Monday by the accounting firm BKD LLP states that during the audit 16 additional overcharges were discovered. BMV spokesman Josh Gillespie says the agency won't know the amount of the overcharges or how many drivers were affected until late June.

The BMV already has refunded more than $60 million in overcharges since 2013. The audit also found 10 additional undercharges to motorists. Gillespie says the BMV will not attempt to recover the undercharges.

Irwin Levin, the attorney who led that class-action lawsuit and has another lawsuit pending, says the public should be outraged at the incompetence.
