Bloomington City Officials Encouraging Residents To Peddle To Work Friday

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington encourages residents to travel by bicycle on National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15. Participants can register their commute at www.bloomington.in.gov/biketoworkday for a chance to a win a gift certificate to a local bike shop.

Bike to Work Day marks the height of the Bloomington Bikes Month, which includes a series events in May aimed at promoting bicycling as a safe and viable recreation and transportation alternative. The event also will include the Fifth Annual Bike to Work Day Block Party, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., hosted by Bloomingfoods at 316 W. Sixth St. The event will feature bike-friendly businesses and food, drink and music. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Autism Society of Indiana's iCan Bike Camp for young people with disabilities.

"Bicycling is an enjoyable, healthy, sustainable and cost-effective way to get to work and around town," said Vince Caristo, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator. "As part of the City's commitment to being a Bicycle Friendly Community, we are always striving to improve opportunities for bicycling in Bloomington."
