(BLOOMFIELD) - The Bloomfield School Board voted on raising the price of school lunches at their monthly meeting on Thursday.
The Greene County Daily World reports, for the 2015-16 academic year, the price of lunches will raise from $2.45 to $2.55, a 10 cent increase.
According to Superintendent Dan Sichting, the United States Department of Agriculture is requiring schools to increase lunch prices to match the reimbursement rate for free lunches as a requirement for participation in the national school lunch program.
Sichting told the board the school will receive a reimbursement amount of $241,000 through this program which is a major revenue amount the school would lose if they didn't comply.
The Bloomfield School District receives $2.98 in reimbursement for each lunch served and currently charges $2.45, which is a difference of 53 cents. Currently, 53 cents is a difference greater than allowed to participate in the program.
The school board raised the price of lunches 10 cents to show the national school lunch program that they are making an effort to be compliant. Officials say it would be unfair to the families of students for us to raise the cost of lunches to the full amount of 53 cents, Sichting says.
