Attorney General Warning Residents To Be Alert To Scams

Last updated on Friday, May 22, 2015

(UNDATED) - The attorney general’s office is warning residents to be wary of people calling on the phone or knocking on their doors with deals that sound too good to be true.

The attorney general's office says it received 5,255 scam complaints last year -- more than double the previous year's total -- and it's on pace to receive even more this year. The Federal Trade Commission reported a similar increase for Indiana.

The attorney general's office says the most likely reason for the increase is that technology is making it easier for those running scams. Outreach services director Michelle Mayer says it's impossible to warn about every type of scam because there are so many. She says the best advice is to be cautious of unsolicited offers.
