(BEDFORD) - The goal for this year's March For Babies scheduled for Sunday, May 17 at the National Guard armory in Bedford in $20,000, according to Chelsea Burke, Community Director of the Wabash Valley Division.

When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to nearly half a million babies born too soon each year. The money raised supports programs in the community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies.
March for Babies has been walking since 1970 and has raised $2.3 billion to benefit all babies.

"This is community coming together to help the organization that helps every single baby born," Burke says.

The money raise in March for Babies funds important research and programs that help babies begin healthy lives. More than 500 local programs were supported to help educate women and reduce risks during pregnancy. Comfort and information was offered to 90,000 families with a newborn in intensive care through March of Dimes NICU Family Support. Your involvement also helped the U.S. premature birth rate to drop for the 7th year in a row.

Currently there are 29 teams registered to walk.

"We are hopeful for more," Burke says. "We are close to reaching our goal, but we are hoping to exceed it."

The event is scheduled for May 17, with registration beginning at 1 p.m. and the walk beginning at 1:30 p.m. To sign up visit www.marchforbabies.org.

New this year Lowe's has donated kid's crafts.

"I'm very excited to have them partnering with us," Burke says. "We've also created a "Legacy of Love" tent where individuals can come celebrate the lives of their babies lost, and those who have won their battle against prematurity and other birth defects. There of course will be music, food and activities so it will be a fun time for everyone."

Representatives from 1340 AM WBIW, Super Oldes 105.5 WQRK, and Z102 102.5 WPHZ will be live on location providing music for those participating and helping March For Babies reach their goal of collecting $20,000.
