Teen In Serious Condition Following Accident

(GNAW BONE) - Five people were hurt in a crash in Gnaw Bone Saturday.

According to a Brown County Sheriff's report, 17-year-old Emily Combs of Columbus is listed in stable condition. She was flown to Methodist Hospital after a head-on collision at State Road 46 East and Brown Hill Road. A Lifeline Helicopter landed on State Road 46 in front of Gnaw-Mart store to transport Combs to Indianapolis. Combs suffered head injuries and was in and out of consciousness, according to the report.

Four other people were also injured in the crash that happened just after 5 p.m.

Combs was a passenger in a 2000 Honda Prelude driven by 18-year-old William Chisman of Nashville. Chisman's car hit another vehicle driven by 17-year-old Jacob Quackenbush of Nashville.

Quackenbush was attempting to make a left turn from the eastbound lane of State Road 46 onto Brown Hill Road when his 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse struck Chisman's car.

Quackenbush told police he did not see the other vehicle and police say he did not "adequately slow down" before making the turn.

After the collision Quackenbush car began smoking.

65-year-old Karen Quackenbush, of Nashville and 18-year-old Samuel Miller of Nashville were passengers in the Eclipse and with the help of a good Samaritans were able to exit the vehicle before it caught fire.

According to the press release, the Nashville Volunteer Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire before it spread beyond the engine compartment.

Police say Jacob Quackenbush suffered a broken wrist. Karen Quackenbush had minor bleeding from a knee and lower leg and a possible foot injury. Miller complained of chest pains. All three were taken to Columbus Regional Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Police say Chisman was disoriented after the crash and couldn't tell police what happened or where he was. He also was taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment.

Assisting at the scene were officers with the Nashville Police Department, Brown County Sheriff deputies, Indiana State Police troopers and Cordry-Sweetwater Ambulance service.
