(LOOGOOTEE) - Lynnetta Bell of Loogootee was presented with the WorkOne Achievement Award for overcoming several employment barriers and pursuing a better life for herself. She received the award Tuesday in a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse.

When Bell came to WorkOne, she was a single mother of three children, homeless, a high school dropout and had a desperate need to find a pathway to a career which could pay the bills and provide a comfortable living for her family. After meeting with a WorkOne Career Advisor and creating a game plan, Bell began taking Adult Basic Education courses at the Bloomfield Library to obtain a High School Equivalency, and eventually passed the exam. Shortly thereafter, she enrolled in Medical Assisting classes at Vincennes University and received a Certified Medical Assisting certification. Due to Bell's enduring determination and her choice to seek out the services of her local WorkOne, she now has a great job in an in-demand industry and is able to provide a good living for herself and her family.

"Lynnetta grew up in an environment that made scholastic success very difficult," said Steven J. Braun, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. "However, Lynnetta was determined to prove to herself that she could achieve academically and in the process, she demonstrated to her children the importance of education and willpower."

The WorkOne Achievement Awards are awarded by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development to 12 individuals for their outstanding accomplishments while participating in the workforce development system. Twelve awards were also presented to employers who partner with WorkOne for their contribution to growing Indiana's economy and commitment to their community. All of the recipients were nominated for the award by their local WorkOne center.
