(MONROE CO.) - Monroe County has been accepted into the first Georgetown University Energy Prize competition semifinals.

About 200 communities contacted Georgetown to compete in the competition, but only 49 were chosen. To qualify, each community had to submit a detailed plan on how it would reduce energy use in the two-year span. Monroe County is the only community competing from Indiana.

Officials will work for two years to make the county as energy efficient as possible. The competition started in January 2015 and will end
December 2016.

Christofer Nelson, project coordinator at Georgetown says they plan to work with local
government officials from Bloomington; Ellettsville and Stinesville as well as two school systems, private schools, religious organizations, the IU Office of Sustainability and other groups.

The county will receive environmental benefits through the energy-saving efforts and the winning community will receive $5 million to spend on energy efficient programs.
