Man Arrested After Firing Shots During Little 500 Celebration

(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indianapolis man was arrested early Saturday morning after a fight broke out in a parking lot across from Memorial Stadium during a Little 500 celebration.

As Indiana State Troopers began to run toward the scene to stop the fight, three shots were fired. As Troopers crossed Dunn Street, two more shots were fired.

The crowd then began to run in all directions.

When troopers arrived in the parking lot where the commotion was taking place, police saw a man waving a gun and then pointing it at a group of people. Police ordered the man to drop the gun instead he fired one more shot in the direction of the group of people and fired one more shot.

The man then ran and threw the semi-automatic.45 caliber handgun under a car.

The man was apprehended and arrested.

Police arrested 27-year-old Lawrence Gomes of Indianapolis on felony charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, pointing a loaded firearm and possession of cocaine.

Police recovered the handgun which had two unfired bullets left in the chamber and several spent bullets. Two bullet holes were found in the nearby apartments with one bullet found that had traveled through the exterior wall, across a room, and into an interior wall.

No one was injured during the incident.

The incident remains under investigation
