(DUBOIS) - Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative lineman Dan Denu will join a crew of 13 other Indiana electric cooperative linemen traveling to Guatemala this month as part of an international initiative to bring electricity to a developing area in Guatemala.

"Project Indiana: Empowering Global Communities for a Better Tomorrow" will bring electricity to a part of the Central American country which has none.

The crew will spend the second half of April electrifying two villages in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala -Sepamac and Jolom Ijix. When completed, approximately 100 poles will have been set, which will distribute electricity generated at the region's hydroelectric generation facility.

The Indiana crews will be followed by crews from Arkansas electric cooperatives in May.
Denu joined Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative in 1978 as an apprentice lineman. He became a journeyman lineman in 1982.

"Over the years as a lineman with Dubois REC, I've seen a lot of destruction from Mother Nature and I'm proud to be part of the team from Indiana to build new construction for the Guatemala people who live a very humble life," said Denu.

This is the Indiana electric cooperatives' second trip to Guatemala. In August 2012, 32 Hoosier volunteers, including 28 linemen from 17 of Indiana's electric cooperatives, traveled to a remote mountain range in Guatemala. The crews spent four weeks working across the rugged mountainous terrain to construct more than 20 miles of power lines and bring electricity to three villages.

Denu will be joined by thirteen other linemen: Brian AmRhein of Decatur County REMC; Bruce Berg of Henry County REMC; Rob Blank of Harrison County REMC; Keith Combs of RushShelby Energy; Jeff Conley of NineStar Connect; Doug MacLain of Marshall County REMC; Doug Sauers of Northeaster REMC; Eric Schank of Southern Indiana Power; Pat Scheruich of Japser County REMC; Michael Shirley of Boone REMC; Eric Shlarf of Fulton County REMC; and Scott Sikora of Kankakee Valley REMC.
