(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HAND) has announced that the annual Blooming Neighborhood Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bloomington Farmers’ Market, 401 N. Morton St. The event is free and open to the public; neighborhood residents are especially encouraged to attend.
The 2015 Blooming Neighborhood Celebration marks the 15th year that Bloomington neighborhoods have gathered together to share in their camaraderie of spirit, work and success. The theme for 2015 is "My Neighborhood Rocks," in the hopes that the theme will provide a venue for each neighborhood to feature its own uniqueness and projects through a variety of methods. Neighborhoods will be encouraged to host their own information table to showcase their neighborhood. The 2015 Celebration will include:
"My Neighborhood Rocks" - the theme for the 2015 Blooming Neighborhood Celebration is meant to give each neighborhood the chance to share with others what makes their community such a special place. During the 2015 Blooming Neighborhood Celebration, a large banner will be displayed, where individuals can show what is unique about their neighborhood with a drawing, a few words or both. This banner will remain on display in City Hall throughout the month of June to showcase the wonderful neighborhoods cultivated here in Bloomington.
"A Day in the Life of My Neighborhood" - Also occurring in City Hall during the month of June will be a special photo exhibit. The exhibit will feature photographs submitted by residents that showcase the uniqueness of his or her neighborhood. Residents of any age are invited to submit a photographic image that illustrates what they think is special about their neighborhood. The image can portray any number of things, including the annual block party, a community garden, or neighbors lending a helping hand; must by high-resolution; and must be submitted via email to michaelm@bloomington.in.gov by May 1. Multiple photos may be submitted, but final selections will be made by City staff. Those selected will be asked to provide a brief written statement describing the scene the image captures. The selected photographs will be displayed throughout the month of June in City Hall Atrium, 401 N. Morton St.
"My Neighborhood Pot Luck Idea!" - HAND has created a book which features submissions by local neighborhoods on best practices and ideas that have worked to implement neighborhood projects, maintain communication with its members, put together neighborhood gatherings and more. The collection of "recipes" creates a resource for Bloomington's neighborhoods to use for ideas for their own projects. Residents may submit any ideas, no matter how small, to the Pot Luck book using the template, which can be found online or requested by calling 812.349.3505. The current book and template submission form may be found at bloomington.in.gov/HAND. Ideas should be submitted to Program Manager Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov.
Playful City USA - Bloomington is a designated Playful City USA by KaBoom, a national recognition program honoring cities and town tat make play priority. Families can pick up a check list for play with ideas for neighborhood gatherings and family fun at the Blooming Neighborhood Celebration.
Grants List - HAND has compiled a list for each neighborhood which identifies all HAND grants it has been awarded since 1998. Each neighborhood will receive this list at the Blooming Neighborhoods Celebration so neighborhood residents can share their projects and how they made them work with others. The neighborhood can be creative as it wants with this listing, including adding other projects residents have initiated.
