(LAWRENCEPORT) - A Bedford woman was crossing the bridge on Lawrenceport Road that crosses Sugar Creek when the roadway gave way and her car fell into a 3-foot hole.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, 34-year-old Amy Arthur was traveling east on Lawrenceport Road and was crossing the bridge when she noticed high water in the east lane.
Arthur told police instead of driving her 2000 Dodge Intrepid into the high water she began backing up and that is when the roadway gave way under the weight of her car, opening up a 3-foot wide hole on the west side of the bridge.
Police say the car fell to the bumper and Mikels Wrecker service had to pull the car from the hole.
Arthur was not injured.
The Lawrence County Highway Department Superintendent David Holmes says Bridge 67 will be closed until further notice.
"It appears due to flooding and rising water levels there is a large void that has opened up under the road behind the bridge abutment which has caused the hole," Holmes wrote in an email. "There is nothing that can be done until the water levels get back to normal and we can assess the situation and come up with a plan to get it repaired."
Holmes says crews have placed barricades and road closure signs at the bridge.
Holmes says the easiest way to get around the bridge is to take Lawernceport Road to Gresham Road to Earl Road back to Lawrenceport Road.
"It is approximately a 2-mile detour to get around the bridge," He added. "We ask that no one walk around the barricades to look at the hole in the road as we do not know how large the void is underneath and it is possible more collapsing could occur. The water is very high and if someone fell in there could be an undercurrent under the road that could be very dangerous. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will get this fixed as quick as we can."
