Bridge Work To Begin Soon On State Road 56 In Salem

Last updated on Wednesday, April 22, 2015

(SALEM) - Indiana Department of Transportation officials anticipate bridge work will begin at the end of April or early in May on State Road 56 at its steel beam structure spanning Highland Creek and the CSX railroad tracks west of Salem.

One half of the structure will be rehabilitated at a time, allowing traffic controlled by signals at either end of the bridge to continue crossing the structure, according to Harry McGinity, INDOT spokesman.

E & B Paving is the state's prime contractor for this $774,725 Seymour District bridge project located just east of State Road 60 in Washington County.

The project includes concrete patching, new pavement approaches and guardrail, bridge joint replacement, mud wall construction and installation of a 3/8-inch polymeric bridge deck overlay. The overlay itself will be done by a specialty contractor.

Phase I calls for S.R. 56 traffic to be shifted to a single lane on the north half of the bridge. It will cross one-direction-at-a-time. After approximately 45 days, the Phase II traffic pattern will shift motorists to two lanes on the south half of the bridge where a single lane will be open in each direction.

S.R. 56's traffic count at this location is 10,430 vehicles per day.
