(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington will join communities across the country in celebrating Public Health Week April 6 - 12. In honor of the week, the City's Community and Family Resources Department will hold a Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to noon during the Bloomington Farmer's Market at City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.

The Health and Wellness Fair will host several exhibitors representing various public health and wellness organizations, who will be available to answer questions and provide educational resources. The will include blood pressure and blood sugar screenings (AIC) provided by IU Health Bloomington, spinal health screenings provided by Osmon Chiropractic Center and depression screenings provided by Centerstone. All screenings are free and open to the public; no fasting is required. Attendees will be eligible to enter a drawing for raffle prizes. The Farmers' Market also will have information on public health services available in the community, attendees may visit both events to learn more about improving their health.

During the first full week of April each year, the American Public Health Association brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the nation. This year's National Public Health Week Theme is "Healthiest Nation 2030," and the goal is to encourage individuals and communities to help make the United States the "Healthiest Nation in One Generation." Every year in the United States, seven out of ten deaths are due to preventable chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. National Public Health Week hopes to raise awareness on preventative health practices to help people live healthier, longer lives.
