(BLOOMINGTON) - One woman was arrested on preliminary battery charges in a protest and counter protest that started at the Indiana Memorial Union and continued along Kirkwood Avenue into downtown Bloomington Wednesday evening.
More than a dozen members of the Traditional Youth Network, a white nationalist group, planned the protest in response to an evening lecture by anti-racism author Tim Wise on the topic of "Beyond Diversity: Challenging Racism in an Era of Backlash."
Starting at 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes before the event took place, a group of about 30 started marching from the Sample Gates toward the Whittenberger while holding signs and wearing Nazi memorabilia.
From the opposite end, a group that formed as a counter protest started to file directly in front of the men, holding up blank banners in an attempt to cover Trad Youth's signs and banners.
After chants from both sides, the groups started to mobilize and move toward the Sample Gates and down Kirkwood Avenue.
As the protest moved downtown, both sides started to get more aggressive toward one another, forcing police officers to intervene and one being arrested.
Officers followed the march until its end, past the city square.
