(BEDFORD) - Threats from a student to go to the gymnasium and open fire has caused for more security to be posted at Bedford North Lawrence High School.
Gary Conner, North Lawrence superintendent, told parents about the incident in a phone call late Friday afternoon.
Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham said the investigation started earlier this month, when police learned a BNL student had made threats to harm other and to themselves.
Branham says officers received more information about the threat this week.
"I recently learned that a student had made comments about coming to the high school gymnasium to shoot whoever he could, and after he finished, he would kill himself," Conner says. "The young man has been taken to a secure facility and after an evaluation is scheduled to be placed in another secure facility. Even though that student is not able to go to the high school, I have met with local law enforcement personnel, other agency personnel and high school personnel to develop an action plan to ensure the safety of all our students and staff. I have authorized law enforcement personnel to place three officers at the high school every day for the remainder of the school year, based upon their recommendation. Even though this may appear to be aggressive, I want to be extra protective."
Branham has talked with Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley about having officers share the additional duties at the high school and he was working out a schedule late Friday.
Officers will volunteer for the duty, but the school system will pay them for the work.
