(SHOALS) - Shoals Police Department has a new K-9. Shani has came out of retirement and is back on the road detecting narcotics in Martin County.
Shani, a 6-year-old black Labrador retriever, is the new canine partner of Shoals Police officer Todd Eckert.
The team have been on the road for about a month and have made a few arrests taking illegal drugs off the streets.
Shani worked with Oolitic Deputy Marshal Bill Allen until October and was retired and returned to her trainer Mary Hall, of Bedford.
But Shani was not happy and missed working so she contacted several police departments and Bedford Master Trainer Mike Johnson, who trained Shani to detect narcotics.
Johnson contacted Martin County Sheriff Robert Street, who was interested in acquiring a police dog. He and Eckert met with Johnson and Shani to witness what the dog could do. Eckert was impressed with Shani's drive and wanted her as his new partner.
Both Eckart and Shani completed training with Johnson and are now certified and patrolling taking illegal drugs off the streets.
