Annual Heartworm Clinic April 6-11

Last updated on Monday, March 16, 2015

(UNDATED) - It’s time to have your 4-legged friends tested for tested for heartworm.

Three veterinary practices are offering the tests at reduced prices during the annual heartworm clinic, April 6-11.

Veterinarian Dr. Jerry Rusch, at Spring Mill Veterinary Service, says dogs being exposed to the mosquitoes which carry the heartworm parasite, puts them at risk of getting heartworms by being bitten. The disease is spread from host to host through those bites.

Pets that go off the preventative or miss a dose should be retested. Treating dogs with heartworm is expensive and difficult because the canine must be quiet for 30 days

Rusch also recommended that dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors or time in the woods be tested for Lyme disease and be vaccinated against the disease which is caused by a tick bite.
