Man Barricades Self In Home, Police Deploy Flash-Bangs

Last updated on Thursday, March 12, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - A 48-year-old man barricaded himself in his house in the 8000 block of South Rockport Road near Kirksville on Wednesday.

The man barricaded himself in the home after he had allegedly threatened to harm his neighbor.

Officers with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and the Monroe County Critical Incident Response Team negotiated with the man for more than four hours. Police believed the man has several firearms in his home.

Just before 10 p.m., the man exited the home after CIRT members deployed flash-bangs - nonlethal stun grenades used to disorient a person's senses - and a nonflammable form of tear gas inside the house.

Police did confiscate the firearms and the man was taken for a medical evaluation.

Under Indiana law, police can confiscated weapons from anyone deemed dangerous. The law also allows for a court hearing during which a judge determines if the guns should be returned to their owner or retained by police.
