Last updated on Wednesday, March 11, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A Lawrence County man was killed after his pickup truck left Ind. 37 and went over the bridge at Spider Creek Tuesday.

According to Lawrence County Coroner Rob Herr, 31-year-old Erick Luttrell of Mitchell died of blunt force injuries to his head and chest.

The accident happened 10:30 a.m. on Ind. 37 between 29th and 16th streets.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the man was driving a Ford truck southbound on Ind. 37 when he left the south side of the road, traveled more than 800 feet down the median and struck the earthen berm of Spider Creek Bridge.

"That launched the truck into the air and it landed in the bottom of Spider Creek," Parsley says. "The vehicle was more than 70 feet below the bridge."

The vehicle exploded on impact.

"The driver was traveling fast enough that the berm did not stop the vehicle," Parsley says.

Bedford Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire and extricated the body from the vehicle.

The Indiana Department of Transportation, Bedford Street Department and Seals ambulance were called to assist. Traffic on State Road 37 was impeded for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.
