(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Reserve Police officers will be patrolling the Milwaukee Trail on bicycles.

Friends of the Trial will be hosting a fundraiser - Howl at the Moon - on April 4. The money raised will purchase bikes for the officers. The goals is to raise $10,000. Each bike costs an estimated $1,000.

Marcey Phillips of Friends of the Trail says having reserve officers on the trail will give people a peace of mind on the trail.

Sheriff Mike Branham says reserves are required to donate 24 hours a month of service and were receptive to the idea. Bike patrols will not begin until possibly 2016 after the bikes are purchased and the reserves complete training.

The Bedford Fire Department has purchased an all-terrain, six wheel drive Polaris Ranged equipped with emergency service equipment and supplies to extinguish fires.

Howl at the Moon is set for April 4 at the U Street trailhead and is sponsored by Healthy Balance Wellness Center.

The family-friendly event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will have live acoustic music, storytelling, tours of the trail on golf carts and stargazing courtesy of the Indiana University Astronomy Department.

There will be hot dogs, s'mores and drinks available for a $10 donation and golf cart tours are $5. Other activities are free. Walkers can enjoy a moonlit stroll from 8-10 p.m. The best howler will be decided at 8 p.m.

At 9 p.m., the IU Astronomy Department will set up telescopes on the hillside above the trailhead for observation. The public can bring their own telescopes if they wish.

Pre-registration is recommended for the howling contest and golf cart tours. To register, call Healthy Balance (812) 279-6330.

Phillips is still looking for more musicians to play at the event. If interested, contact Phillips at Healthy Balance.

Tickets for the food and golf cart tours can be purchased in advance at Healthy Balance. The first 100 people to buy a ticket receive a Milwaukee Trail window cling.
