Owen Beaver Wins 41st Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee

(BEDFORD) - Owen Beaver, a 7th grader at Shawswick Middle School, is the winner of the of the 41st Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee.

Ben Wray, a 4th grader at Fayetteville Elementary, finished in second place. He was also the Elementary Champion.

The event went six rounds with Beaver spelling 'drowsiness' correct. Ben needed to spell his next word correct to challenge Beaver in the next round but he misspelled 'consensus' giving Beaver the title.

Placing third was Samuel St. John, a 7th grader at Oolitic Middle School. Sarah Getman, a sixth grader at St.Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Middle School placed fourth with Jacob Kline, a 8th grader at Bedford Middle School, placing fifth and Gabriella Willoughby, a 7th grader at Mitchell Jr. High School, placing sixth.

Beaver, the son of Mark and Dana Beaver of Bedford and the big brother of Griffen, will advance to the 2015 Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 21 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Registration and a light breakfast will begin at 10 a.m. The Spelling Bee will start promptly at 11 a.m.

He also won a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party, provided by Marcos Pizza, for his homeroom.

All participants received a 1340 AM WBIW Spelling Bee t-shirt and a certificate.

The top three received a bee bobble-head trophy.
