(BEDFORD) - Commuters as well as pedestrians and property owners will be affected by the renovations being made to the center of the city.

David Goffinet and Jim Farny of the Lochmueller Group met with the city's Historic Review Board last Wednesday with owners of downtown properties.

Marla Jones, the city's business and community development director, attended both sessions. Mayor Shawna Girgis attended the property owners' meeting.

City officials discussed the status of four projects: the Milwaukee Depot move, the downtown streetscape enhancements, the Harp Commons improvements and the Lawrence County Courthouse grounds landscaping.

To accommodate pedestrians and those using the Limestone Trail loop which is still under development, pedestrian switches will be installed on streetlights. Concerns were raised that this would cause interruptions and backups in traffic on 16th Street.

Improvement of I Street was also discussed. The right-hand lane would be changed to be a right-turn only lane at 16th and I streets. Between 16th and 15th streets, I Street would be one lane heading north, then back to two lanes heading north starting at 15th Street, These improvements have many advantages such as making a clear right-turn lane at 16th and I streets and allowing more room for parking and better sidewalks between 15th and 16th streets.
