Downtown Mitchell Gets A New Restaurant

Last updated on Friday, March 27, 2015

(MITCHELL) - The town of Mitchell will be home of a new restaurant dubbed the Railroad Cafe.

Making use of an abandoned building on 641 West Main Street, contractors gutted the entire bottom level of the building.

Owners Jonathon and Jenny Vanslyke, Mitchell natives, and purchaser of the property Robert Burton, want to breathe new life into the downtown building. Prior to its new name, the building was known as the Cargas Candy Kitchen and then Lonnie's Restaurant which many Mitchell residents may still remember.

The restaurant will offer all day breakfast fare, plate lunches, homemade soups, and gourmet sandwiches. Taking a cue from Lawrence County's rich history they will offer the favorite sandwich of astronaut and Lawrence County native Gus Grissom, which happens to be the Rueben. Grissom served his country and honored his hometown by being the second American to fly in space. Grissom passed away in a pre-test flight of the Apollo 1 mission on January 27th, 1967.

A lot of hard work has been put forth to return the building to its former glory. Upon completion and opening the Railroad Cafe will be Mitchell's sole downtown restaurant.
