(AREA) - Indiana's Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center announced on Tuesday that they will hire 350 new employees.

About 3,000 military base employees rely on Crane's defense electronics, engineering, and logistics, and the workload remains steady for the company, who fills a critical role in the military world.

Naval Sea Systems Command gave Crane the green light to make the new hires. According to Crane spokesman Brian Bailey, most of the new jobs will require college degrees. Bailey also says that the new jobs will spread throughout the base, not just in one particular area.

Former Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman endorsed the hiring because of the major economic impact that Crane has on Southern Indiana.

Personnel at the base has been steady for the past few years, around 3,000 workers, by replacing people who retire or leave. The number of personnel reached a height of around 7,000 during the Persian Gulf War.

Bailey said that about 40 percent of the jobs have been filled, with about 200 or so remaining. A list of remaining jobs can be found at Some of the fields that are yet to be filled include: acquisition and contracting, business, chemistry, computer engineering, electrical engineering, human resources, industrial engineering, information technology, logistics, mathematics, mechanical engineering and project management.
