Amphibian Outing At McCormick's Creek State Park March 21
Last updated on Tuesday, March 17, 2015
(SPENCER) - Amphibian Outing at McCormick’s Creek State Park on March 21 will celebrate the arrival of spring and the emergence of salamanders from their winter homes.
Indiana has 22 salamander species.
Members of the Hoosier Herpetological Society (HHS) will be at the park to share their knowledge about these elusive creatures and guide visitors on quests to find them.
The event also will feature information on toads and frogs. Planned activities for the day include:
- 10:30-11:30 a.m., Canyon Inn front lawn, "Amphibian Triathlon": Open to children of all ages; hop like a toad, jump like a frog and walk like a salamander to win prizes.
- 1-2 p.m., Nature Center program room, presentations by HHS members: Live animals on display and a slide presentation on amphibians of Indiana.
- 2:30-4 p.m., Salamander Search: Carpool to Canyon Inn, then hike to the creek on Trail 3, learning where and how to look for salamanders. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for exploring the creek.
- 4:30-5:30 p.m., Canyon Inn lobby, Beady Salamander Craft: Make and take a critter key chain (very young kids will need parental help).
- 5 to 8 p.m.: Dinner is available at the Hickory Dining Room in Canyon Inn.
- 8 p.m., from Canyon Inn, Amphibians at Night: Carpool to the campground pond for a glimpse into the nighttime activities of amphibians. Waterproof boots and a flashlight are recommended.
This event is sponsored by Canyon Inn, the Friends of McCormick's Creek State Park group and Hoosier Herpetological Society.
McCormick's Creek State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2978.htm) is at 250 McCormick's Creek Park Road, Spencer, IN 47460.
